if i lived here: the front room gets its groove- Sutherland home

This front room is just begging to become a music and game room.

Here is my mood board vision for the Sutherland front room.

Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, it was common for homes to have a “music room” or “parlor”, a place where families would gather around the piano, sing together, or entertain guests with an evening of live music. It wasn’t just about music; it was about connection, hospitality, and slowing down enough to enjoy each other’s company. I love that idea so much, I’m carrying on the tradition in my “if I lived here” home, breathing new life into an old custom and making space for both music and memories.

The big, south-facing windows practically shout “Fill me with plants!”, so you can bet I’m adding all the greenery I can get my hands on to this room. I will place an antique chest between the front windows and layer it with plants of all sizes and shapes and cool 70’s decor items and maybe a disco ball or two. Once again, really cool oversized art will be hung wherever I can place it.

To set the vibe, I’m going with a moody deep gray-blue on the walls. Most of the house will be light and airy, but every home needs at least one or two spaces with a little drama, especially if its main job is fun and hanging out.

Music will be everywhere in here.

If you know our family, music is central to who we are. We are never without music playing in our home. To honor our true essence and tradition, picture this: a piano to the right of the fireplace, a vintage record player, old school stereo, and stacks of vinyl to the left. (…yes, I did cover up that window to the left…did you notice that?… The view is skewed anyways so let’s pretend it is not there and put an entertainment center there.) Guitars, harmonicas, tambourines, and a bongo (because why not?) scattered about, just waiting to be picked up.

For seating, a buttery camel leather sleek sofa and four cozy chairs will gather around a big round table, perfect for card games, puzzles, or the occasional intense round of Sorry. (Side note – My husband says I cheat, but he is just a sore loser. I play fair and square, I stand by that… but I’m brutal, especially when it comes to the game Sorry. I’ll send you back home in a heartbeat!) On the wall opposite the fireplace, a TV for PlayStation and Wii battles (or Just Dance nights) will complete the scene.

This room is meant to be the fun spot of the house. Since the rest of the home leans formal, this space will loosen things up while still pulling in some timeless style from the past. Basically, it’s where elegance and “let’s jam” meet in the best way possible.

That’s how I envision this space…if I lived here.

I’m Kristin

aka Kiki, a dreamer, doer, and daydream decorator living in Louisville, Kentucky. I share my home with my husband, our college-age daughter, and two high maintenance landlords named Magnolia and Briar.

By day, I juggle multiple part-time jobs, including working for a home staging and design company and by night, I scroll through dreamy real estate listings and Hampton private chefs Instagram and imagine the life I’d live if I lived there.

Welcome to just me, living here a space where I pretend to be the homeowner and designer of beautiful homes that are (sadly) not mine. I create mood boards, and design ideas, all while living my very real, very ordinary life in my own home.

Some days I might be me showcasing a multi-million dollar riverfront stunner, and the next it’s just me… sharing my favorite products, throwing together dinner, ordering mocktails, eating bread or planting radishes (that nobody eats).

This blog is my love letter to the life I dream about and the real one I live. It’s part inspiration, part pretend, and part practical. A little home design, a little gardening, a little cooking, a little drinking, and a whole lot of honest living.

Thanks for being here, it means a lot to a girl with big dreams, a lot of love to share and a messy little house. 🌿✨
